SCHOOL CLOSINGS

Reminder– Big chief will be OPEN on Monday April 1st. Lunch and 2 fruits will need to be packed for the day. Remember peanut and tree nut free lunch.

Big Chief will be closed from Monday April 22nd thru Tuesday April 30th. School reopens on Wednesday May 1st. Day care days offered are Monday 4/22 to Thursday 4/25 from 8 to 4:30. Please pack your child’s lunch, 2 fruits and a sheet and blanket. Also remember to send in peanut and tree nut free foods.

WHAT’S BEST TO WEAR!!

Now that spring is here, we will be going outside as much as possible. Please have your child wear sneakers to school. Please NO crocks or sandals, it is much safer while playing, running, etc. in the playgrounds.

EARLYBIRD 2024 REGISTRATION

If you have not yet done so, please get your earlybird registration form in for September 2024. If you need a form, please call the office @ 516-781-3900, or go to the website.

ON RETURN 5/1- You will need to send back their sheet and blanket on May 1st.  We will also be taking out their Big Chief sweatshirts. If you did not return their sweatshirt please do so.

CLOTHES DRIVE- We will be having a Big brother Big sister clothing drive the week of 5/1 to 5/6, pick up will be on 5/7t. If you are cleaning out your closets for spring cleaning remember to drop off your bags here. All sizes needed from infant to adult.

MS. KATYA’S CLASS:

Special Events: On April 12th we would like to have a cultural feast. We are asking all parents to send in a food from their culture (about ½ tray). It should come in Friday morning with your child. The children will have a buffet that day of all the different foods. Remember allergy alert, NO PEANUTS/TREE NUTS. Send in ingredients. Please email me at bigchiefschcamp@optimum.net and let me know what you will be sending in.

PROGRAM:

MISS JEANNINE’S CLASS:

Theme:  Spring, and continuing our Nursery Rhymes: “Rain, Rain go away, “Jack be Nimble” and bear hunt book.

Language Arts:  Stories: “Springtime” and sing songs such as “Rain, Rain go away.”

Science:  We will be going on nature walks to look for flowers, bugs, and birds.

Art: We will be making umbrellas and working on our book using all different paint textures.

Music and Movement:  Marching with instruments, freeze dance, exercises, and parachute fun and the bear hunt.

Physical:  Kicking and throwing the balls. Climbing outside to build and strengthen small and large motor skills.

MISS ALEXANDRIA’S CLASS:

Theme:  Spring and April showers.

Social and Independent Skills:  Encouraging the use of language to express ourselves while we play and share with our friends. Talking about what we wear on a rainy day. Continue working on using a spoon and fork during lunch, drinking out of a 5oz plastic cup, and saying “please” and “thank you”. 

Language Arts:  Reading stories such as; “A Rainy Day,”” “My Red Umbrella” and “Kitten’s spring.” Nursery Rhymes such as; “Rain, Rain, Go Away,” and “Hey Diddle Diddle.”

Art:  Exploring creative art with spring colors as we string umbrellas. Making a spoon, dish, cow, and a moon.

Science:  Looking for signs of spring on Big Chief grounds. Watching our bulbs grow, smelling the flowers, using our mirror, magnifying glass, and color panels.     

Music:  Marching with instruments and dancing with scarves. Going through our tunnels and using our parachute.   

Physical: Running in the field, kicking balls, catching bubbles, going down the slides, balancing on the swings and visiting our animals and coloring to strengthen our small motor skills. Animal cars and ride along cars to develop our large motor skills.  

MISS JENNA’S CLASS:

Theme:  Spring and April showers.

Social and Independent Skills: Continue to practice putting on our shoes and helping our friends.  

Language Arts: Introducing rainy day books and nursery rhymes such as “The rain came down,” “It’s raining, its pouring,” and “Baby Bumble Bee.” (Fingerplay)

Art: Painting with spring colors and working on our baby bumble bee project.

Science:  Going on nature walks, feeding the birds, and visiting the bulbs we planted.      

Music: Continue our free-play music with scarves/instruments, also working on our instructional music, such as movement.   

Physical: Running in the field, using the wind to blow scarves, and chasing bubbles.

Important Reminder for Ms. Jenna’s class

We are no longer using sippy cups.

MISS ELISA’S CLASS

Theme: April Showers and Spring.

Art: Easel and finger painting, and making decorative umbrellas.  

Language Arts: “Splish splash spring”

                         “Rain, Rain Everywhere”

                         “Wake up its Spring”

                          And books related to Passover.

Physical: Parachute and bean bag activities; races in the field with our streamers; blowing bubbles; throwing and kicking balls.

Science:  During our nature walks, we will be looking for the bulbs the children planted in the fall. We will also begin hunting for bugs.  

Math: Sizes (small, medium, large); and shapes; using our blocks to create shapes. Continue using scissors.

Cooking: Matzoh Brie

MISS ANDREA’S CLASS

Theme: Spring, continue working on our community helper’s unit- mail carrier and dentist. After spring break, we will begin our transportation and air unit.

Art: Making a scrunch oval egg with tissue paper.

Finger plays: “I Hear Thunder,” “Rain on The Grass,” and “Barney song.”

Language Arts: Books relating to the themes, such as: “Little Cloud,” “Honey,” “Wake up its Spring,” “Splish splash spring,” and “Going on an airplane.”

Math:  We are sorting things that are small/medium/large.  We are matching and sorting vehicles according to if they travel by land, air, or sea.

Movement and Music: “It’s Raining, It’s Pouring,” “Rain, Rain Go Away.”

Physical:  Parachute play, creative movement and watching the clouds.

Science: Observe the environment around us before and after rainy days. Try to locate a rainbow after it rains.Taking a nature walk to notice the early signs of Spring (trees, grass, flowers, etc.). Games: Digging in the dirt to look for worms and guess what airplane is missing.

House Area: Turning our house area into a dentist office and a post office. (Please write a letter with your child and mail it to Big Chief attention Ms. Andrea’s class).

Block Area:  Construct roads, buildings, and a train station.  

Outside: Visiting our playgrounds, running, and jumping.

Cooking: We will be making Matzah Brei and playdough.

 MISS PATTI’S CLASS

Theme: Jungle, Zoo, Under the Sea, Spring. Continue with the Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Language Arts:  Reading stories about the zoo/jungle and under the sea animals. Discussing and answering questions about the content of the stories.  Taking a lot of dictation on the information we are learning.

Housekeeping/cooking: Going on safari, zookeeper, and park ranger. Eat Matzah.

Science:  Discussing and describing body parts and physical characteristics of animals.  For example, fur, feather, and scales. Comparing and contrasting ourselves with animals. Observing weather changes. Discussing what changes we are seeing outside.

Music and Movement:  Parachute play, riding bicycles, obstacle courses, scarves, and streamers; using hula-hoops and balance beams. Instructional CD’s.

Dear Parents:

We are learning about these animals and their habitats. So maybe while you are on spring break you may be able to visit some of these places.

                                    books or even watch the “Jungle Book” movie.

                Zoo –                      Maybe a visit to the Bronx Zoo would be nice

              Under the Sea –   Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead or the New

Miss Patti’s class will be learning about Zoo’s and the animals in them the week of April 1st. If you have any stuffed animal that would live at a zoo, please feel free to send them in. Please be sure the stuffed animal is labeled with your child’s name on it.

Pre-Kindergarten Program

MISS KATYA

Theme: Spring, and continue Multi culture.  We will be finishing up our unit on multiculture with the USA. Then off to prehistoric time.

Art: We will be making the American flag, and passports to show what countries we have visited. Dinosaur sponge painting, dinosaur skeletons and dinosaur necklaces.

House Area:  Continue working on learning our phone numbers and home address. We will be making apple pie for USA, dino oatmeal and tar cups, as well as Matzah.  

Language Arts:  Reading books about the different countries we are learning about. Book on Dinosaurs such as; “Danny the Dinosaur;”

‘The First Dinosaur;” “Fossil Detective;” and “If the Dinosaur came Back.” Continuation on our character books.

Science: Science experiments relating to April showers and homemade rain. Making Fossils, a volcano and watch it erupt.  

Blocks:  Building famous building such as; Empire state building, White house, and the statue of Liberty. Create a pre-historic tar mud pit and becoming paleontologists. Searching for different types of dinosaurs such as; Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Brachiosaurus, and pterodactyl. We will also be creating dinosaur skeletons with our blocks. 

Math:  Reviewing our math concepts from the beginning; 2 step and 3 step patterns, 1-1 counting. Playing board games to practice our math skills and taking turns. Why are games important? (Not video games) Brings families together, can teach important social skills such as communication verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns, and enjoying interacting with each other. It also encourages mathematical thinking, problem solving etc.
