Summer Programs
Big Chief is large enough to offer its campers a variety of activities, yet small enough to offer each child the individual attention that you, as a parent, are looking for. At Big Chief, we never economize on the well-being and happiness of our camper; YOUR CHILD IS OUR MAIN CONCERN! We are a family-owned and operated camp and take a special interest in each child that comes into our care.
Big Chief has been serving the surrounding area since 1954. Our excellent staff, fine program, modern facilities, and dedication to children have earned us our fine reputation. Our camp is located at 2427 North Jerusalem Road, in East Meadow, New York, which is just west of Newbridge Road and one quarter mile north of the Southern State parkway.
Campers are accepted between the ages of 6 weeks and 12 years of age. They are divided into groups according to their age and sex. Teachers and college students are hired to carry out our camp program.
The sports that we have at Big Chief are soccer, hockey, volleyball, basketball, handball, wiffleball, gaga, tetherball etc. A variety of different sports programs are available for campers to choose from. With such a diverse program and our wonderful sports facilities, campers could develop their individual skills while having fun. Good sportsmanship is the name of the game!
The emphasis at Big Chief is on swimming. We have two beautiful, heated pools and provide American Red Cross swimming instruction by our certified water safety instructors to all campers.
All campers swim two times per day, and on extremely hot days, extra swim times are added. Our Smaller pool graduates from 18 inches to three feet which was designed to teach especially the younger children how to swim. This pool is deep enough for swimming instruction, yet is not part of the larger pool, so the children cannot wander down into deeper waters.
Campers are evaluated the first 2 days of camp and placed in swim groups according to their skill levels, not age.
Our pools and surrounding area are closely supervised by water safety instructors and Nassau County certified lifeguards. The counselors for each group are also on duty offering additional supervision.
Our beautiful park-like facilities including four air-conditioned buildings, a large, well-maintained sports fields, and five age-appropriate playgrounds.
In addition to our sports and swimming program, campers can participate in a variety of fun such as: arts and crafts, science, nature, animal care, gardening, cooking, rocketry, woodworking, Legos and more.
